Our Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Worcester Intermodal Facility underwent a major expansion following a historic partnership between CSX Transportation and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. As part of the design-build, 79-acre effort, BOND was engaged to deliver enabling work for this project, working closely with Eversource (formerly NSTAR) and the prime contractor to relocate and reroute underground natural gas utility mains. BOND installed 3,250 feet of new, HDPE natural gas main and 2,500 feet of HDPE natural gas building services. Due to the site’s landlocked location in downtown Worcester and its proximity to residential neighborhoods, the expansion project is recognized as one of the most complex endeavors ever undertaken by CSX.

  • Gas transmission & distribution work needed to be complete within a fast-track, six-month schedule to accommodate the larger expansion effort
  • Extremely tight, urban site with more than 50 contractor and subcontractor teams working concurrently
  • Work completed adjacent to an active rail line and a highly-populated, urban area

  • Close coordination with CSX, City of Worcester officials, two nearby manufacturing facilities, and surrounding residents to tie-in natural gas services
  • Consistent communication with CSX to ensure no disruption to rail services
  • Collaboration with prime contractor and designer to ensure BOND’s work accommodated larger, design-build plans and schedule

  • Successful ongoing operations for CSX’s largest customer, UPS, as well as MBTA Commuter Rail service
  • Successful expansion of Worcester Intermodal Facility to one and a half times its original size
  • Enabling services completed within six months, keeping expansion project on track for completion within 20 months of start date
  • Safe, efficient tie-in of natural gas services with no disruption to area residents or businesses
