Situation:
Kendall Station is a 256 megawatt combined cycle power plant located in the densely populated, biotechnology area of Kendall Square, Cambridge, Mass. To improve the performance and efficiency of this combined heat and power plant, BOND was engaged to perform several utility and foundation upgrades. During winter months while the plant was “live”, BOND relocated underground piping and ductbanks, managed installation of 500 piles and formed and placed 6,000 CY of concrete for massive equipment foundations. BOND also installed a new fire suppression system and managed equipment deliveries as well as crane activities.
Challenges:
– Complete project on a fast-track schedule
– Heavily trafficked location placed additional focus on site safety
– Repower old steam sets
– Relocate existing utilities
Solutions:
– Additional focus on site safety
– Precisely orchestrated project logistics
– Dick Corp., the EPC contractor implemented a badge system with training to provide safety measure for work performed in the live plant
Results:
– Completed on a fast-track, 16 month schedule.
– Since completion, plant has quadrupled electricity output and reduced air emissions by 41%
– Improved district heating efficiency by more than 90 percent.
