Situation:

The Middletown to Norwalk Transmission Line is one of the longest 345kV underground electrical cables ever installed in the United States. The project spans 22 miles through five Connecticut communities within Fairfield County. To ensure the delivery of this major transmission project, BOND was engaged to install over 100,000-linear feet of conduit, 116 precast splice vaults and a 54-inch pipe jacking under the Metro North Railroad.

Challenges:

  • Site conditions presented many challenges involving dewatering, contaminated soil and environmentally sensitive areas
  • Located across many residential and neighborhood communities
  • Site contained significant amount of ledge
  • Challenging pipe jacking under Metro North Railroad

Solutions:

  • Close collaboration with environmental consultant and local agencies to assure proper de-watering techniques and soil handling were used
  • Due to traffic, a majority of work occurred at night on less traveled areas of Route 1
  • Strict communication protocols with area residents to keep them informed of construction activities

Results:

  • BOND provided self-performing crews supplemented with local subcontractors to complete the project on schedule
  • Minimal disruption to adjacent neighborhoods and communities
  • Successfully increased reliability of electric power source through five Connecticut communities
