Situation:

As part of an effort to enhance Columbia Pipeline Group, Millennium Pipeline and Spectra Energy’s gas transmission capacity in New England, BOND was engaged to install a new Meter & Regulator Station at an existing facility, including a metering building and permanent access bridge. The new station houses three 12-inch gas turbine meters, ball valve regulators for flow control, piping, overpressure protection, and an odorant injection system, and was completed at a major gas interconnect for the Northeast.

Challenges:

  • Located on a tight site adjacent to a high-end residential area
  • Completed at a sensitive, major interconnect for New England’s gas supply
  • Aggressive schedule to minimize disruption for continuous pipeline operations
  • Situated in a state park with highly environmentally-sensitive, indigenous wildlife

Solutions:

  • Utilization of sophisticated management systems – including BIM 360Field, Revit, Primavera and HCSS – to closely track and manage schedule
  • Rigid quality control and safety tracking via BIM360 Field to effectively coordinate tie-in of existing services to the new station
  • Strict communication protocols with area residents to keep them informed of construction activities
  • Involvement of environmental consultants to ensure safety of site workers and mitigate disruption to area wildlife

Results:

  • No disruption to adjacent neighborhood
  • Tie-in to existing services delivered with a 20% reduction in schedule
  • Flawless safety record
  • Allowed for further expansion of pipeline capacity in the Northeast
