SITUATION:

Enbridge Inc. (formerly Spectra) chose BOND to install a five-mile natural gas pipeline extending from Dedham to West Roxbury along with accompanying meter station. BOND self-performed the pipeline installation and meter station to complete the project on time and on budget. The scope of work included the installation of a 24-inch crossing under MBTA tracks, 48-inch crossing under the I-95 highway and installation of five miles of pipe as well as a new meter station through three highly congested residential communities.

CHALLENGES:

  • Pipe installation located within several densely settled residential neighborhoods
  • Maintaining traffic flow
  • Dewatering
  • Stringent permit restrictions
  • Protester opposition for pipeline construction

SOLUTIONS:

  • Established communication protocols with area residents to keep them informed of construction activities
  • Performed installation at off-peak hours to minimize traffic delays
  • Developed dewatering system to control groundwater levels and eliminate threat of contamination
  • Developed protocol for protester coordination which was then adopted by Enbridge

RESULTS:

  • Minimal impact to neighborhood residents
  • Newly installed pipe provides National Grid with the additional capacity needed to add to their existing system
  • Zero safety incidents and zero downtime related to protester disruptions
